Products: Salad mix, greens, seasonal produce, eggs, floral bouquets, and a variety of herbal teas, rubs, and tinctures. Certified Naturally Grown
Availability: Saturday and Tuesday markets, April through November, special order lamb Nov-Jan , eggs and herbal tinctures by request year round
About Us: Farming is a lifestyle choice and more than full time for Lorinda. In addition to working on the farm, Solly has been doing massage work for 28 years. As Solly does in his bodywork, we look for imbalances in the farm, animals, plants, or soil and use gentle natural means to hold the right balance long enough for growth itself to re establish harmony.
Farming practices and philosophy: For 15 years Avalon has been lovingly tended using nature’s own processes to revitalize the soil – composted plant matter and manures, mulching, natural soil supplements, plant rotation, companion planting and cover crops. No chemical fertilizers or insecticides are used.
Our lambs are pasture-raised. We don’t rush their growth, use herbal/natural wormers, and take them directly to a meat processor on the morning they are butchered for a minimum of stress. Stress can put distasteful hormones into the meat. Sheep are an integral part of our farm as ecological mowers and fertilizers. We keep just enough sheep to be in balance with the rotated pasture.
Chickens are part of the overall plan also. They get all the weedings and kitchen scraps, insect pests hand-picked from the gardens, plus all they can gather when free-ranging the pasture in the afternoons. The poultry also have organic grain feed available with herbs and kelp added to winter rations. They produce bright-yoked eggs.
Bringing health to the soil and water, contentment to the animals and birds who share our lives, vitality to our food, freedom from pain for our bodies, and joy for our spirits – it is all part of Avalon dreams becoming reality.

Products: Handmade paper items and hand carved relief print art.
About Us: The ‘cause’ is Liberian orphan relief- a church mission project to which I donate proceeds from the sale of my products. The ‘creation’ is handmade paper, art cards and handmade paper items such as ornaments and vessels (bowls, containers, etc.). My handmade paper is made with plant materials grown on our farm here in Harrisonburg, Va. Combined with recycled paper and cotton linter, plant materials include alfalfa, straw, mixed grasses, corn husk, and various kinds of flower petals. I formulate the pulp in small batches and hand process each sheet of paper by the centuries old method using a wooden mold and deckle with a wooden hand press. My relief prints are all hand carved and I use a variety of media and techniques such as batik and watercolor to create small works of art and cards. You will see that my favorite subjects are animals, nature scenes and primitive art. Making paper from scratch with renewable resources in addition to recycling is also very gratifying. Much more about my creative products and the Liberian orphan relief effort to which the proceeds are donated can be seen at my website.

But I have been known to “cheat” and throw a fresh Raspberry on top of a Ganache Cake or at the center of my Pineapple Upside down cakes in the Winter months. About Us: I (Phil) have been farming for nearly 10 years and have been interested in Market Gardening since I was a child. My parents have always had a garden and began to sell produce at a roadside stand in Indiana when I was 7. When we moved to Virginia in 1998, I worked full time off the farm and grew some vegetables during the summers on rented land along North Mountain Road – that is where the name ‘North Mountain Produce’ was born. My wife Sarah, who joined me in November of 2008, also has memories of a large garden in her home state of Minnesota and working at a local strawberry farm there. While she misses the strawberries she doesn’t miss the long winters!! Dreams do sometimes come true. My dream was always to eventually farm full time and 2010 will be my 5th season as a full time farmer!
Farming Practices & Philosophy: Beginning in 2010, we plan to use only natural or organic pest control methods & fertilizers. I have been working toward this the last few years by steadily reducing our use of commercial fertilizers and using natural methods of pest control when possible. We do not grow any genetically modified crops, and we use untreated seeds when available. We use drip irrigation on most of our irrigated crops because it uses significantly less water than traditional overhead irrigation. We also use mulch on many of our crops for water conservation and weed prevention.

Phone: 540-908-8259
Email: port_farm@yahoo.com
Products: Vegetables, herbs, flowers, small fruits, and wood turnings.
Availability: Tuesdays and Saturdays depending on availability of products
About Us: After retiring, we were fortunate to find a small farm located on a ridge in the Port Republic area. We are constantly amazed to be able to look at the Blue Mountains while taking care of our plants. We are committed to being good stewards of the land.
Farming practices and philosophy: Port Farm uses cover crops of annual rye and clover to help prevent erosion, reduce weed growth, and provide organic matter for crop production. Clover captures nitrogen from the atmosphere and releases it in the ground as the plant dies resulting in less requirements for fossil fuel based synthetic fertilizers. Green mulch of clover and orchard grass are placed around crop plants to help control weeds and retain moisture. As the green mulch decays, it provides organic nutrients to enrich the soil for plant growth. Annual rye grass is also used as a protective border around crop plants to help protect young, tender plants from wind damage. Safe and approved herbicides, insecticides, and synthetic fertilizers are used only as a last resort. Wood from Appalachian trees are used as much as possible for wood turnings.

Products: Raw honey and raw infused honey. “The local bar” handcrafted tallow soap from mostly local ingredients. Lotion bars and lip balms. Coming this year we plan to have creamed and comb honey as well!
Availability: Saturday Market year round, Tuesday and Thursday Markets, June through September.
Farming Practices and Philosophy: Our bees receive no antibiotics or synthetic chemical treatments. Through a selective breeding program we are endeavoring to raise survivor bees. The honey is not heated, preserving its beneficial enzymes. Our herbs and produce are grown organically, though we are not certified.
We place an emphasis on sustainability and do our best to find ingredients in addition to our own that are local, fair trade, organic, wild crafted and/or cultivated without chemicals.
Bring your honey jars and caps back for a 25¢ return deposit! We sterilize them using less energy than recycling the conventional way and reducing the “mileage” on the jar that holds your local honey.

We sold our first breads at the Broadway Farmers Market in the summer of 2006. During the winter of 2006-07, we continued to work at the craft of artisan breads. We expanded to four ovens, which we keep humming on baking days. The Spring of 2007 saw us move to the Harrisonburg Farmers Market.

David’s attention to detail, his problem solving skills and his creativity are evident in this newest adventure as they were in earlier experiences as an organic chemist and a chef. David and his cat Ellie live on the west bank of the Shenandoah River’s South Fork; near the town of Shenandoah.
Philosophy: We feel the specialness of the Shenandoah Valley should be treasured and remembered. We focus on reproducing an essence of the Valley to be shared with friends, both near and far.

Farming practices and philosophy: After years of baking contemporary white flour-based breads, I became enlightened to the nutritional value of whole grain-long fermentation breads. As the old grandmother’s saying goes, “The whiter the bread, the sooner you’ll be dead.” With a few years of experimenting, I have come up with these recipes. All my breads are made with 100% fresh ground whole wheat flour. The long fermentation process results in a shelf stable loaf with deep, complex flavors and superior nutritional value. For those watching carbs, we also offer a sprouted grain bread and a multi-grain bread made with some sprouted grains. Sprouting the grain increases the protein content and creates a unique texture and chew. Stop by for samples!
